چکیده

An earlier report from these laboratories described the metabolism of carbon and nitrogen compounds by Penicillium notatum in surface culture (Hockenhull, 1946), and some references were made to the utilization of sulphur by this organism. Further work on the latter aspect seemed desirable, especially as penicillin is a sulphur-containing compound. It is the purpose of the present communication to describe these investigations. Previous work on the sulphur metabolism of moulds is limited and is mainly concerned with A8pergillu8 niger. Rippel & Behr (1936) showed that this fungus, when supplied with sulphates, liberated considerable quantities of organic sulphur compounds into the medium. M6thes (1938) showed that when cystine, cysteine or thioglucose was supplied sulphates appeared in the medium. M6thes also showed that the reduction of sulphate to organic sulphur was greater in presence of ammonia than in presence of nitrate. Steinberg (1941) showed that many inorganic sulphur sources were available for the growth of A. niger (e.g. sulphate, thiosulphate, etc.) and concluded that the mould removed sulphur from organic compounds via sulphoxylic acids. Woolley & Peterson (1937) demonstrated the accumulation of 'cyclic' choline sulphate (,-sulphatoethyltrimethylammonium betaine),

Microbiological Aspects of Penicillin: III. Production of Penicillin in Surface Cultures of Penicillium notatum.

Steadily increasing interest in penicillin as a chemotherapeutic agent has led to a parallel increase in the demand for penicillin for clinical application and chemical studies. Penicillin is produced in minute quantities by Penicillium notatum so that filtrates from the mold represent exceedingly dilute solutions of penicillin from which the active agent is extracted. The magnitude of the prob...

Comparison between batch and fed-batch production of rhamnolipid by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

This paper presents a comparison between batch and three different sets of fed batch fermentations forrhamnolipid production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The batch run was performed with 500 ml of culturemedium having the initial glycerol and sodium nitrate concentrations of 30 and 8.3 g/l, respectively. For a fedbatch run with nitrogen source in feed, 250 ml of the nitrogen exc...

Organophosphonate Utilization by the Wild-Type Strain of Penicillium notatum.

We studied the biodegradation of compounds containing phosphorus-to-carbon bonds by using a wild-type strain of Penicillium notatum. The substrate specificity of this strain was studied, and we found that it is able to utilize structurally diverse organophosphonates as sole sources of phosphorus. This ability seems to be inducible, as indicated by the presence of a lag phase during growth. A po...

Cultural Characteristics of Penicillium Notatum in Relation to the Production of Antibacterial Substance: Indication of the Dual Nature of the Antibacterial Substance.

Of the bacterial antagonists thus far known to be produced by microorganisms, the most effective in bactericidal action against Brucella abortus is the culture filtrate from a strain of Penicillium notatum (Kocholaty, 1942). Another antibacterial substance, penicillin, also obtained from a culture of a strain of Penicillium notatum, but with very little potency against Brucella abortus, has bee...

One-Factor-at-a-Time Optimization of Polyhydroxybutyrate Production and Growth of Alcaligenes eutrophus by Altering Culture Parameters and Incubation Time

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bioplastics derived from renewable resources such as vegetable oils, corn starch, or microbes. The polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a short-chain-length PHA, and the most important bioplastic produced by certain microorganisms in the presence of excess carbon sources. In this study batch cultivation of Alcaligenes eutrophus with the aim of increasing PHB production ...
